How the Financial Rebellion began
After working in the finance field for 30+ years, I was deeply frustrated at seeing so many business owners NOT receiving the support they needed from their paid finance professionals, or simply lacking the financial information they needed to succeed—in large part due to the 'hands-off', 'automated' and 'depersonalised' nature of modern accounting industry and software.
To make matters worse, these same business owners didn't know how to confidently engage with their numbers themselves.
The result? In a word? Fear. The harsh reality is that most business owners are shouldered with a deep sense of overwhelm, anxiety and uncertainty around their finances.
→ So, I set out to make a difference where it mattered! By educating entrepreneurs about their finances, teaching them how to understand their numbers, and empowering them to regain more control in their lives.
MY TIMELINE
1983
A career advisor quips “You’d be good in Management. Accounting is a great stepping stone to that”, planting the seed for my future. So, I lined up a cadetship with Arthur Young before my HSC exams were done! 💪
1984-1987
I worked and studied at night for a Bachelor of Economics with a Major in Accounting.
1988-1989
Upon graduation, I started full time work in small tax practice, commenced and completed the gruelling “Professional Year” and married my teenage crush!
1990-1991
With interest rates at all time highs we decided to buy land “in the country” and follow the dream of building our own home. I worked in Tax and Audit with a regional firm in Taree.
1992-1999
This was a nesting and working and juggling period! We had our first, second and third bubs Liam, Adam and Ivan. I came out from behind the accountant's desk and got more experience inside business as the Accountant and Special Projects manager for an Apple reseller with 5 branches. Hubby built a painting business, we built our little house. During this time I qualified then worked as an Attache consultant and taught Auditing and Computerised accounting TAFE as well.
2000
GST was on its way! It was time to return to tax practice in Taree. We watched on as MYOB flooded the market and businesses started to computerise to manage the extra work that the GST would create.
2000-2010
I continued in this tax practice working closely with a variety of clients—managing tax planning, reviewing files, auditing superfunds and supervising my team. This era saw significant change in our industry—including the rapid ramping up of Self-Managed Superannuation. (I was one of the early members of the professional body set up to serve that industry.) As the “Professionalising of Financial Planning '' started to push highly- qualified Accountants away, I began to worry about the future of our holistic services.
2010
I Ieft the comfort of my job and started to explore how else I could bring holistic support back into accounting—and set up my first business, CSI Business Solutions, for freelance accounting work for small businesses.
2015
I enrolled at The Entourage (I saw it as an MBA in small business!) and discovered the disconnect with financial information amongst my peers was much worse than I expected. This ignited my passion to find and provide a solution!
2016 - NOW
This period saw constant iteration to deliver what small business owners were being deprived of—ultimately, helping them address their financial challenges more and more deeply as an accountant and then Financial Mentor at Better Business Decisions.
2022
I recognised Financial Anxiety as the thing that stops business owners from understanding their financial information and started to refine my approach to my upcoming book. That was when I realised nothing short of a Rebellion could deliver that same power to business owners everywhere"I realised that my work was taking business owners from Powerless to Curious - which ultimately ignited the financial intelligence and helped them flex and grow their financial power. 💪
May 2023 - January 2024
I spent hundreds of hours distilling and rearranging my observations, thoughts and client experiences into the final book, Financial Rebellion!
